Race

Thinking more about the idea of race that was discussed in class last week, I found an article on a website (http://www.medicinemagazine.info/consumer/index.php/articles/5-human-evolution-biology-and-anthropology/7-the-myth-of-race ) which shows how racial constructs developed over history, and how they are only actually social constructs and myths that have become more and more prevalent within our belief systems over time. The website shows that racial identity only really became popular in the way that we use it today from the European imperialism and colonization, in the 15th and 16th centuries, and from a very early stage it was used to distinguish and determine the supposedly ‘culturally superior’ from the masses. I found it interesting that it hasn’t always existed in the way that we view it today, and it shows how and why the notion of race declined so much over the years. The article interestingly shows how race is not biological, and it uses blood types to highlight this. It shows that blood types are the same no matter what the pigmentation of your skin, and using this avenue it aims to show that race is a myth. I think therefore, thatracial stereotypes and classifications need to be broken down and deconstructed by society, and I agree with Dr. Lane’s point that the overall term of ‘race’ itself, needs to be thrown out
